Memorial Day

I have to say that this day inparticular is very special to me... first off because I am an Operation Iraqi Freedom Vet (404th ASB, 4ID, FT Hood) but also because today is my mom's birthday! To put mom aside for a minute (sorry mom), it is important to take some time and thank those that protect us... and allow us to live the way we do.

I am not going to go on a political rant... or say if I am for or against the war... but what I most certainly am for is freedom! I am for all Americans to have the right to peacefully have an opinion... and I am for our elected officials to have the right to make decisions (hard ones at that) as long as they have the good of the country in mind.

I love this country... and I love that it has given me the oppertunity to grow up in a safe neighborhood, go to schools that taught me not only about books, but about life. I love that it gave me the honor of serving in its Army and the privelidge of leading our young heros into battle... and I love that it has put me in a position now to own a company doing something that I enjoy doing.

That being said, I hope that if you are an American... or someone who claims their citizenship with another country but lives in the US... that you take a second out of your day and thank the men and women that protect our borders and allow us the privelidge of having an opinion.

GOD BLESS THE USA!!!!

Finally... an Indianapolis Mover that Works on Sunday

I am not here to toot my own horn... okay okay... this time maybe a little bit! I have been working at All My Sons Moving and Storage for sometime now, and during the summer I am constantly asked if we will move them on a Sunday. I will admit, that in the past I definitely looked at Sunday as my chance to finally kick back relax... maybe even do a little BB-Qing. However, in an attempt to make my customers happy All My Sons is now doing Sunday moves!!!

That is right, if you are the customer calling every Moving Company in the phone book trying to find someone... anyone... that will move you the next say.. a SUNDAY... look no further! Here at All My Sons Moving and Storage we strive everyday to accomodate all customers in all situations. That is right... even the last second guy has a home with us. We are not going to spike up the rates and take advantage of the fact that we are the only moving company in Indianapolis that will do the move for you... no no... like I said before, every customer is an important customer to us! :)

So, if you are stuck in a bind, and need someone to professionally load, pack, and store your belongings... we would be honored if you chose us!

ENJOY THE RACES... AND ENJOY YOUR MEMORIAL DAY!!!!!

Moving Important People

At All My Sons Moving and Storage we like to think that everyone that we move is of equal importance and deserving of the highest quality. With that being said, we have moved some celebrities that get all of our crews excited. Professional basketball, football, baseball, and hockey players... not to mention race car drivers and the occasional national dignitary. As you can imagine it is quite amazing to walk into their homes.

Of course we do not disclose who or what we have moved, but lets just say some of the things are mind blowing!! Anything from signed sports equipment from Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky to Fabrige Eggs worth millions... we have moved it all!

The last celebrity that we moved was a past member of our very own Indiana Pacers and the crew that we sent out to do the move was star struck for the first few minutes. Kenny, one of the crew members that has been working here for about 3 years, after meeting the ball player said, "At first it was hard to concentrate... I meant I used to watch this guy hit three pointer after three pointer and now, here I am pad wrapping his dresser!!" I have to admit, even as the owner of this fine business... I was even excited for the move!

Of course the Pacer was happy with the move... as a matter of fact this was the second time that we have moved him, and hopefully the next time he moves... we get to do it all over again!!!

Super Bowl in Indianapolis!!

That is right folks... The SUPER BOWL is coming to Indianapolis!! News broke yesterday that the 2012 Super Bowl will be played right in our own backyard... doesn't get any better than that!!!

Here is a copy of the article put out by Yahoo Sports...

ATLANTA (AP)—Indianapolis was awarded the 2012 Super Bowl on Tuesday, the fourth time a cold-weather city will host the NFL’s championship game.
The new retractable-roof Lucas Oil Stadium was runner-up to Dallas last year. This time, Indianapolis beat out Houston and Arizona for the game, which will be played Feb. 5, 2012, for the title of the 2011 season. Part of the bid includes a pledge by the city to build a practice facility downtown that will be left in place for local residents to use.
“We like coming to new cities and we look forward to being in Indianapolis,” commissioner Roger Goodell said in announcing the bid. “We also liked the idea of a donation left for the citizens.”
The next two Super Bowls are in Tampa and South Florida.
Of the 42 Super Bowls, the three played indoors in cold-weather cities were in Detroit in 1982 and 2006 and in Minneapolis 1992.
Indianapolis wants to create a Super Bowl village downtown—a pedestrian-friendly area complete with fire pits to make “warm zones.”
In its bid, the city touted its $700 million stadium, scheduled to open in August, and its experience hosting major sporting events such as the Indianapolis 500 and the NCAA Final Four.
“This isn’t our first rodeo,” said Susan Williams, president of the Indiana Sports Corporation. “We have a lot of very experienced volunteers.”

I am predicting a matchup of... Colts - New Orleans... with the score being 28-17... COLTS!!

What to Ask When Choosing a Moving Company in Indianapolis

There are many things that a person should look out for when choosing a moving company...and with that in mind there are some questions that a customer should already have in mind prior to making their first call.

Questions you NEED to ask...
1. Are you licensed and insured, AND CAN YOU PROVE IT?!
2. Are you a member of the Better Business Bureau, and are you in good standing?
3. Are your movers on payroll with a full background check being done periodically?
4. Are you a broker? When the truck pulls up to my house will it have your name on it, or are you going to sell my move to the highest bidder?
5. What are your hidden charges?

There are many moving companies that will, in their sales pitch, tell you that they are licensed and insured and promise you a professional move. However, what you might be getting is a group of "day laborers" that have no idea how to move furniture and are definetly not on any kind of payroll. I am not here to scare anyone, but if that "day laborer" hurts themself in your home... guess who they are going to cmoe after?? That's right... you! You have an individual providing you with a service that is not covered any workmans compinsation program and now he is hurt... someone has to pay... just don't let it be you!!! Go with a reputable company that can offer that information to you immediately either by fax or e mail... and yes, it is that easy! Don't let a company tell you that it is in the mail, or the information is not readily available. That is when it is time to move on to another company

Being a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) says something about the company that you are about to do business with. Basically they are putting their dirty laundry out there for everyone to see, because they are proud of who they are. Everyone has blemishes on their BBB report card... that's because accidents happen. However, what is important to note is the number of "unsettled claims." These are issues that the company has not addressed, and that number is extremely telling! Now if the moving company that you are looking at is not even a memeber... immediately put down the phone and call someone else!

Having a background check for all the employees goes back to the first comment. It is funny, because when you familiar with the moving environment those companies stick out like sore thumbs. Their hourly rates are sometimes near half the reputable companies, and generally they operate out of their house.. it is just bad business. Unfortunately, the general public is not educated on moving/movers and can be baited in by these "rogue" movers. You would not believe some of the nightmare stories I have heard from customers that have used these companies before. Take my word for it... pay the extra cost for a good, well respected, and licensed/insured company. In the end it will save you time, heartache, and of course money!

Something you really need to look out for is dealing with a moving broker. Don'tget me wrong some of the moving companies that brokers sell your business too are excellent, but to tell you the truth... you never know what you are going to get!!! That is right, you think you are dealing with this huge van line with a great name, but actually they are just selling your move to the highest bidder and when "Poppa Joe's Moving" shows up at your door don't be surprised. Go with a company that moves you... and does not sell you... that is my recommendation.

Know what you are being charged for upfront. Don't get me wrong, I am a firm believed that a customer should be responsible for the services provided... but a company should not hide those costs, making it seem they come with the per hour rate, and them spring them on you when it is time to pay. That is just ugly! So, know what you are paying for.

This should give anyone a good start off point when talking to moving companies and getting estimates. Good luck in the hunt... and of course you can avoid all the aggrivation and just go to www.allmysons.com/indianapolis and have all your answers without even asking one!!

Free Moving Estimates -- Indianapolis

A lot of people do not know when it is appropriate or even worth having an estimator come to their home and look at their stuff. It is safe to say that if it makes you more comfortable talking with a certified moving specialist face to face... then you should get one.

Bare in mind that we do from 10 to 20 moves per day of all different shapes and sizes... and have been doing so for over 4 generations. So, are we able to set up a move over the phone without meeting face to face... absolutely! We do it everyday.

Back to the estimating though. If you require an estimate you can expect nothing but professionalism. Like I said we have been doing this for years... so we are in and out of your house in about half an hour, and by the next day you will have a price for your move. It is really that simple.

What you probably don't know is that there are many different options that you have with regard to how you are billed for the move...
1. You can get a flat binding rate. This is as simple as it sounds... there is a single price and that is it

2. Not to Exceed. The charge is our basic hourly rate, however, instead of receiving a binding price you are being given a ceiling that it will not go over.

3. Hourly. In this instance you pay for exactly what you get. If we work for 2 hours that is the amount that you pay for... however if it is a large move and it goes longer the price correlates with the time.

We give you these options because we want our customers to be comfortable. Remember, the ball is in your court... we are just helping you get to the basket!

Being a Mover...

Being a mover is tough work... no doubt about!! Before jumping into the industry I did some time in the Army and deployed for about 15 months. Now, I am not going to say that moving was that hard, but it is hard nonetheless.

With that being said it is extremely rewarding working for All My Sons. If you think about it we get to see folks on one of the toughest... most stressful day of their lives... and when it is all said and done, we make it easy. Hearing the sigh of relief or even the look of beliderment when they see that the 10,000lbs of furniture that was in the house they just sold... is now sitting exactly where they want it, in the house they just bought!! It is an awesome sight.

Most people think that moving is just getting a truck and loading it... oh how wrong they are! Loading a truck is more of an art form, even a dance, than one could imagine. I know you don't believe me... so allow me to elaborate.

The driver is the conductor. He generally stays in the truck to load while the helpers are running items in and out, however, when he first gets there he will do a walk through and develop a plan for how they are going to accomplish the task. He will point out certain pieces to the help, and then head back to the truck to load. The truck is loaded very specifically, with large pieces forming the base and boxes on top to fill in the over head. Once going the helpers do not even need to ask what is needed... they simply look at how it is being loaded and start getting items to fill in the holes.

Honostly, when one watches this dance from start to finish it is truly amazing... moving is not something someone picks up in one day. Most guys who work here at All My Sons have worked 10-20 years to be a driver... and driving is only the half of it!!!

Certified Mover

What is a Certified Mover?

I understand moving is a stressful time and the way moving companies price their moves may be confusing. Furthermore, deciding who will be the mover of your family’s personal possessions and whom you invite into your home isn’t a simple task either. Thanks to the American Moving & Storage Association of America they have come up with a program to help you decide who is best for you. This program is called the AMSA Certified Mover and Van Line Program. Here is how it works:

The AMSA Certified Mover and Van Line Program is a voluntary program for movers who elect to participate by committing to provide a professional level of service, together with efficient complaint handling and dispute resolution services for their customers. It is ope to all AMSA members. AMSA Certified Movers and Van Lines are held to a high standard of performance as agreed to in the AMSA Code of Conduct.

Program Benefits

The AMSA certification program protects the public by providing an identifiable measure of competency, while aiding the moving industry by encouraging and recognizing high professional achievement. It also puts a strong emphasis on the value of a professional move and sends a positive message to potential customers, Federal and State political leaders and consumer groups.

Through self-regulation, the AMSA Certified Mover and Van Line Program serves to:
Improve the professionalism of industry employees.
Furnish a means of distinguishing consumer-oriented companies.
Assist companies in enforcing get-tough quality control policies.
Be an impetus to improve internal industry training programs.
Aid in recruiting better employees and contractors.
Ensure just and reasonable practices and rates.
Reduce claims and legal expenses.
Help to avoid unnecessary government regulatory burdens.
Provide a valuable marketing tool for participants.
Encourage growth in AMSA membership.
The Certified Mover and Van Line Program helps to protect the public by providing an identifiable measure of quality while, at the same time, enhancing the moving industry by encouraging and recognizing high professional achievement. Under the voluntary program, movers are required to observe a professional code of conduct and to provide service to their private transferee (C.O.D.) and, as an option, their corporate customers, in a manner that promotes confidence in the interstate household goods moving and storage industry. A certificate and a special seal that may be used in their advertisements identifies certified movers and certified van lines. Participants in the program are also listed on the industry's consumer web site: http://www.moving.org/.

Listed below are several questions you should answer prior to committing to a moving company. If you answer “NO” to any of these questions, your mover is not in compliance with Federal Regulations.

1) Are they licensed and insured?
2) Do they have their tariff filed and available to be viewed in their main office upon your request?
3) Do they have an Arbitration Program available?
4) Did they provide you with a copy of OCE-100 Your Rights and Responsibilities booklet?
5) Did they provide you with a copy of their household goods dispute settlement program?
6) Did they provide you with a copy of their complaint and inquiry handling procedure?
7) Did they provide you with a high value and valuation information sheet?
8) Did they provide you with a Ready to Move brochure?

By choosing an AMSA Certified mover you are guaranteeing yourself a successful move and should something go wrong the mover is most likely going to take extra care of you ao that they can keep their certification.

Big News in AMSA

AMSA News!!!
The American Moving & Storage Association has just launched its new online video service to showcase and connect its members and advise consumers on one of the most important decisions they’ll make."AMSA TV is just the latest example of our expanded outreach efforts to both better serve our membership and provide an important resource to millions of Americans when they choose a firm to professionally pack, transport and safeguard their possessions," says AMSA President and CEO Linda Bauer Darr. "And it’s a great opportunity for us to highlight professional movers and help get their message to the public."The new service features three "channels," each targeted toward its own audience: the Member Channel includes AMSA members speaking out on industry issues; sharing tips, information and ideas with their colleagues; and discussing their companies and whatever else may be weighing on their minds. The Consumer Channel is the place to go for anyone planning a move, whether home or office, for expert advice and guidance on everything from how to choose a professional, qualified mover to what to do when moving day finally arrives. On the channel, AMSA members will be able to spotlight their own charitable work and other community involvement initiatives.AMSA TV’s News & Events Channel provides coverage of the association’s events, conferences and awards ceremonies. It also includes clips about the industry that were featured on local and national TV news programs. "Our members are especially excited about this new venture," Darr says, "so even our international members will be able to hear and see other movers describe their challenges and successes. We’re really encouraging them to submit their own videos and get in on the conversation. I think of it as the You Tube for our industry."The initial clips on the Member Channel are themed around the value of AMSA membership. This Blog is credited to The American Moving and Storage Association and the article AMSA TV is On the Air by John Bisney, Director of Public Relations. I also want to Thank the many customers and future customers we have visit this blog and hope that you find all the information provided helpful. Once again, Thank You for choosing All My Sons Moving and Storage.

March Maddness...

Looks like we are going to have to wait another year to fill out our brakets, talk about the bubble teams, the bubble busters, and the cinderellas... I gotta tell you here at All My Sons we go crazy for this kind of stuff!!
Just like college basketball picks up in March so does the moving industry!! Here in Indianapolis the weather looks like it is just starting to break out of the winter temperatures and people are starting to realize... IT IS TIME TO MOVE! Needless to say our trucks are leaving the warehouse at 6:30am and sometimes not getting back until 12 o’clock at night! I gotta give it to the guys... they are some of the most driven people I know.
Getting back to basketball...
I am not going to lie to you.. I was a little disappointed with the way the Memphis/Kansas game ended. Does anyone really want to see some of the best college athletes out there shooting free throws... I just hate to see that! I know it is part of the game, and I am not saying I know how to fix it... but it just seems to take something away from a great game!
Well... at least the draft is right around the corner.... GO COLTS!

Moving??? How to get Yourself Ready!!

I pulled this from my company home page... but the information is soo valuable!! This will walk you through your move step by step. I know moving can be stressful, and here at All My Sons we do everything possible to alleviate that stress during the move... but by following these simple steps you can ensure yourself a GREAT move!!!

Six to Eight Weeks Before Your Move
-Choose a moving company (Click here “How to choose a Moving Company”)
-Create a "Moving Planner Folder" file using an organizer folder with pockets to keep track of all your moving details and collect your receipts for moving-related expenses.
-Start to use up things you can't move, such as frozen foods and cleaning supplies.
-Learn about your new city and community (Click here “Moving to a New City”)
-If you're moving at an employer's request, verify your moving budget and your responsibilities.
-Obtain information about what moving expenses may be tax-deductible.
-Make a list with three columns: items to leave behind, items for moving company to move, and items you'll move by yourself. For each item you are not going to take with you, decide whether you'll sell it, give it away to charity, or otherwise dispose of it before your move. (Click here “Inventory Wizard”)
-Make a list of everyone you need to notify about your move: friends, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, etc.
-Begin to enjoy the local paper in your new community
-Locate all motor vehicle registration and licensing documents.
-If you will need to store some of your belongings, make the necessary arrangements now. (Click here “Find Storage”)
-Collect all your personal records (school, medical, legal, and accounting). Ask for referrals where possible.

Five Weeks Before Your Move
-Submit a Change of Address form to the post office. (Click here “Change of Address”)
-Arrange special transportation for your pets and plants.
-Arrange to Disconnect/Connect all utilities (gas, electric, oil, water, telephone, cable TV, and trash collection) at your old and new addresses. Keep phone and utilities connected at your current home throughout your moving day. (Click here “Change Utilities Wizard”)
-Arrange for insurance coverage in your new home (auto, homeowner's or renter's, medical, and life) (Click here “Insurance”)
-Plan a garage sale to sell unneeded items or arrange to donate them to charity.
-If necessary make travel arrangements and reservations for your moving trip.
-Collect important papers (insurance, will, deeds, stock, etc.)

Four Weeks Before Your Move
-Create a floor plan of your new home and begin thinking about where you'll want to place furniture. Advance planning eases the stress of making major decisions when your furniture arrives at your new home. Mark and label specific pieces of furniture on your diagram and put it in your Moving Planner Folder.
-If you're moving out of or into a building with elevators, contact the building management to schedule use of the elevators and inquire about any other guidelines that must be followed.

Three Weeks Before Your Move
-If you're packing yourself, ask your moving company to deliver an assortment of boxes, this service should be free and you should only have to pay for the boxes you use. Start packing items you will not need to use until after your move. (Click here “Packing and Supplies”)
-Have your automobile serviced if you're traveling by car.

Two Weeks Before Your Move
-Contact your Moving Consultant to review and confirm all arrangements for your move. (Click here “Moving Consultants”)
-If you're doing your own packing, Start Packing. Label the contents of all boxes and pack carefully. Box essential items together and write "Open First/Load Last" on these boxes. When you move into your new home, you'll be able to easily identify these boxes and find essential items. It's a good idea to let a professional mover pack any fragile and valuable items. That's what they do for a living and they have proven methods for keeping your items safe. (Click here “How To Pack”)
-Arrange to close accounts at your local bank and open accounts in your new locale.
-Don't forget to withdraw the contents of your safety deposit box, pick up any dry cleaning, return library books and rented videotapes, etc.
-Drain gas and oil from power equipment (lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc.).
-Some state laws prohibit the moving of houseplants. Consider giving your plants to a friend or local charity.
-Make sure to notify your Moving Consultant if you add items to, or subtract items from, your planned household goods shipment or if there are any changes in the dates of your move.

One Week Before Your Move
-Check back through your Moving Planner Checklist to make sure you haven't overlooked anything.
-Prepare specific directions to your destination for your moving company. Make sure your Moving Consultant knows the phone numbers where you can be reached until you get into your new home. (Click here “Destination Information”)
-Defrost your freezer and refrigerator. Block doors open so they can't accidentally close on pets or children.
-Have your major appliances disconnected and prepared for the move. (Again, your relocation consultant can help with arrangements for a third party to provide these services.)
-Prepare a "Trip Kit" for moving day. This kit should contain the things you'll need while your belongings are in transit. Make sure to load your Trip Kit into your car to avoid it being loaded into the van by mistake.
-Pack a box of personal items that will include all your jewelry and small valuables. Take this box in the car with you.
-Call ahead to confirm the utilities are connected at your new home.
-Contact your Moving Consultant to confirm arrival time of the moving van as well as to notify them of any last minute details.

Moving Day
-Strip your beds, and make sure the bedding goes into a "Load Last" box.
-Make sure that someone is at home to welcome your movers and answer any questions. Your Van Foreman should present you with a “Your Right and Responsibilities” brochure. (Click here “Right and Responsibilities”).
-It's important that an adult be authorized to take your place if you are unable to be present at any time while the movers are there. Let your Moving Consultant know to whom you have given this authority. Be sure that your chosen representative knows exactly what to do. Remember - this person may be asked to sign documents obligating you to charges.
-Accompany the Van Foreman as he or she inspects and tags each piece of furniture with an identifying number. These numbers, along with a detailed description of your goods and their condition at the time of loading, will appear on the inventory. Read your Bill of Lading and Inventory carefully before you sign them. Keep these -- and all related papers -- in a safe location until all charges have been paid and all claims, if any, have been settled.
-It is your responsibility to see that all of your goods are loaded, so remain on the premises until loading is completed.

Move In Day
-Review your floor plan to refresh your memory about where you want furniture and appliances placed.
-Plan to be present when the moving van arrives. Be prepared to pay the mover before unloading. Have payment on hand for your moving charges. Unless other billing arrangements were made in advance, payment is required upon delivery in cash, traveler's checks, money order or cashier's check. Moving Companies do not accept personal checks.
-One person should check the inventory sheets as items are unloaded. A second person should direct the movers as to where to place items.
-Once all items are unloaded, unpack only what you need for the first day or two. Focus on creating a sense of home for your family. Give yourself at least two weeks to unpack and organize your belongings.
-Contact your Moving Consultant and inform them of the level of Quality and Service you received during the moving process.

All My Sons... Going Green

All My Sons Indianapolis is going GREEN!! That is right... we are implementing a system that will make our customers smile and keep Mother Nature on our good side. In the very near future we will be implementing a used box recycling program. Not only will our customers be able to get the clutter of un-needed boxes out of the house... they can do it knowing that they are helping to keep our sky a little brighter.

Here at All My Sons the importance of the environment is always incorporated into our planning process and it reflects in all of our daily activities... no matter how "insignificant" we think that action is. Whether it is proper route planning to cut down on fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions or simply using recycled paper and cups in the office... everything makes a difference!

At All My Sons we are continually trying to improve our service and this time it looks like everyone wins!!!
